Since its opening in 1993, the specialists of the center for vision restoration, under the direction of Dr. Kurenkov, have been professionally engaged in solving this problem. Currently, in our clinic we use all advanced techniques for the correction of nearsightedness at any age!
According to statistics, nearsightedness (myopia) occurs in every third inhabitant of our planet. It can be detected at any age, but usually it starts at the age from 8 to 16 years, and then either progresses or stabilizes. But in any case, myopia reduces the quality of life and requires constant attention.
Nearsightedness is one of refractive pathologies, which is characterized by impaired distance vision. The disease occurs because of a discrepancy between the refractive power of the optical system of the eyeball and the length of its axis. All methods of myopia treatment and vision correction in this case are based on eliminating this problem in various ways.
The cause of nearsightedness is the anomalies of the eyeball structure, which are associated with the impaired refractive function of the ocular media, or a change in the normal length of the eye axis. The genetic factor is also important, causing a predisposition to disease.
Classification of myopia
Low | less than 3 diopters |
Medium | 3-6 diopters. |
High | over 6 diopters. |
Methods of treatment and correction of nearsightedness
There are three main groups of methods:
- medications;
- conservative;
- surgical.
Drug treatment of myopia is rarely used as an independent method. There are no drugs that can alter the refractive properties of the ocular media or the anterior-posterior dimension of the eye. Drug therapy is aimed at creating temporal changes in the accommodative apparatus of the eye.
Optical correction of myopia relies on glasses with dispersing lenses or bifocals. Wearing glasses makes it possible to adjust the refraction of light rays in case of myopia, so that a person has better distance vision
Types of lenses:
- soft contact;
- rigid gas permeable.
Wearing lenses or glasses does not affect the progression of the disease and is a method for correcting nearsightedness.
Surgical laser treatment of nearsightedness in Moscow
Dr. Kurenkov’s Eye Center offers advanced high-precision microsurgical techniques to treat nearsightedness.
Photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) is one of the first treatments based on the change of the curvature of the cornea. The key aspect is to change its refractive properties (in case myopia).
Currently, this method is of limited use due to the fact that the surgery is quite painful, and both eyes are operated on different days.
There is a modification of PRK called laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), which allows achieving good results in the restoration of visual acuity.
Treatment of myopia by LASIK implies using a laser to change the curvature of the cornea. All manipulations are carried out in the corneal stroma after forming and placing a flap in a special way.
Advantages of LASIK:
- takes little time;
- no blood loss;
- normal visual acuity returns immediately after the surgery;
- high efficiency;
- optimal price;
- stability of the result.
Indications for treatment by LASIK: myopia (up to -11 D) and other types of refractive errors. Further information is available here.
REIK (refraction correcting excimer laser in-situ keratectomy) is a modification of LASIK. It has all the advantages of laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for treatment of myopia and is performed using a microsurgical technique, taking into account individual characteristics of the structure of the patient's cornea.
Implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (PRL) is used in cases where it is impossible to carry out laser treatment of nearsightedness. Such a lens can be implanted in the anterior or posterior chamber of the eye. The result is a change in the refractive power of the ocular media and, therefore, the correction of myopia.
Indications:
Correction of myopia with contraindications to excimer laser surgery.
Contraindications:
- anomaly of the transparency of the cornea;
- cataract;
- glaucoma;
- subluxation of the lens;
- surgery of the retina, vitreous and the anterior chamber in the medical history.
Treatment of farsightedness and astigmatism can also be carried out by means of implantation of intraocular lenses (IOL) with replacement of the crystalline lens.
